Who Runs Woofers?
My name is Bren Axon and I am the proprietor of Woofers.
I am passionate about dogs and my husband and I have over 20 years of experience of dog ownership mostly with larger breeds.
My husband and I emigrated to Canada from the UK in August 2006. In the UK, I worked in a law firm and was also a Magistrate, sitting in the criminal and family courts. I spent 8 years volunteering with the RSPCA as a branch committee member and branch administrator, and along with the Treasurer was responsible for the day to day running of the branch. I was also in charge of rehoming. I was proud to also serve as a member of the Regional Board of the RSPCA.
As can be seen, since emigrating, my life has changed completely! I am now able to fulfill a dream that I have had since childhood; that is, to work with dogs.
I know from personal experience with our dog Max that it is difficult to hand over the care of a precious pet to someone else - one always feels that nobody is going to take care of one's dog quite as well! I therefore take very seriously the trust that owners place in me when they ask me to look after their dogs.
I am a certified dog trainer and I belong to the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).
I am Chair of the Victoria SPCA Community Council. I am also a member of the Executive of Citizen Canine Dog Owners' Association an organisation that is dedicated to advocacy for dog owners, education and community building.
In 2007 I founded the Vancouver Island Big Dogs Club which is an informal club for owners of giant breeds. We get together every couple of weeks to walk our dogs so they can socialize with others of their own size. Owners enjoy the walks as much as the dogs and the club is constantly growing. Having started with only 10 members, we now boast well over 100.
I am constantly reading and updating my knowledge about dogs and dog behaviour as well as attending seminars and workshops in order to further my understanding of our much loved furry friends (Please see Education and Training page).
