Is your dog driving you crazy with unwanted behaviour such as jumping up, pulling on the leash, chewing or digging?  Does your dog lack manners? Do you dread taking your dog for a walk?  Do you sometimes feel your dog is taking over your home and  you with it?

It is true to say that many of the behaviours that we humans find hard to accept from our beloved canine companions are completely natural to a dog and can occur as a result of a lack of communication between you and your beloved pet!   Woofers aims to assist you and your dog to live in harmony by helping you learn to improve communication with your dog and understand your dog's behaviour. Understanding your dog is usually the  first step to solving those problem behaviours; the second step is learning how to teach your dog the acceptable behaviour and Woofers can help you achieve both.

Woofers offers one to one training for you and your dog to suit your schedule.  This is ideal for clients whose busy lives don't allow them to commit to a fixed training class regime.   I will meet with  you at a time that is most convenient, even at weekends.   Depending on the type of training that is required, this can be at your home, in a park or anywhere else that you wish.

What happens if I decide I would like Woofers to help me train my dog?

The first step is to meet with you and your dog to take a detailed history of dog's behaviour. This normally takes between 1 - to 1.5 hours. I will then write up an assessment report and training plan which I will send to you.  During that first meeting I will normally give you some information and advice  that you can start using straight away.  Then we can meet for our first training session.   After each training session, we will have a discussion about what you and your dog learned. I will then compile and send you a progress report, outlining again what happened in that day's session and explaining the  "homework" exercises for the coming week until we meet again.   While I am helping you and your dog I will always be available by email or telephone to answer any questions that you may have.

You can decide upon how many sessions you wish to have. You can pay for a set number of sessions or each session individually.

Modern, reward based  training is based on proven scientific principles such as Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning. It is the  belief of reward based trainers that dogs are sentient beings who do not deserve to be bullied or terrified in the course of training them.  I don't believe in the out dated methods of "dominating" dogs;  for example, using the "alpha roll"  which is popular with some TV dog trainers. As a result of trying to force a dog into a behaviour the dog's behaviour may become worse; the dog can become more aggressive, or the dog may just shut down altogether.   The end result will be a dog that doesn't trust you and why would you want a dog that doesn' t trust you and is afraid of you?

My motto is that what I would not do to a child, I would not do to a dog either.

I follow the example and positive training methods of internationally known and respected trainers and authors such as Dr. Ian Dunbar, Jean Donaldson, Terry Ryan and Sarah Kalnajs to name a few.

Please see the articles section on my Links, Articles and Events page for an article by Sarah Kalnajs about the power of positive dog training as opposed to punitive methods.

I am Vice President of Vancouver Island Animal Training Association which is an organisation that is dedicated to promoting humane methods of training animals on Vancouver Island.

I use only reward based, humane training methods.

This means that I don't use choke collars, prong collars, or shock collars to train your dog. I won't be jerking your dog around by it's collar or frightening your dog into submission by shouting or physically punishing your dog. My focus will be on rewarding the good behaviour.

I do not believe that it is necessary to hurt or frighten a dog to teach it to become a well behaved member of the family.  Using violence to train a dog only succeeds in suppressing the unwanted behaviour (the dog is too frightened to express it) and does not change the dog's attitude or the emotional state which is causing the behaviour.  This can be particularly dangerous in the case of a dog with aggression  issues.

It is known that using harsh training methods can cause a dog's behaviour to worsen and a dog may develop new behaviour issues as a result of that method of training.
